BACDS September 2014 Electronic Mailing

BACDS sponsors English and American traditional dances in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is fun, relatively easy, community-oriented dancing with live music. All dances are taught, no partner is necessary, and first-timers are welcome unless otherwise noted.

Palo Alto Halloween Contra

Saturday, November 1, 2014, Palo Alto

Join us in Palo Alto for the 34th annual BACDS Halloween Costume Ball, a frightfully fun evening of contra dancing to Vermont band Pete's Posse (Pete Sutherland, Oliver Scanlon, and Tristan Henderson) with Vermont caller Mary Wesley and special ghosts. Costumes encouraged (compete for the Ron Award!) but not required.

Dare to be Square West

Friday-Sunday, November 15, 2014, San Mateo

Dare To Be Square West is a weekend of square dance and music workshops, dancing, jamming, and fun with a mission to promote and preserve traditional square dancing. This event is for everyone, but targeted to interested callers and musicians from up and down the West Coast. Callers, old-time musicians, dancers, and listeners interested in learning the tradition of square dance calling and playing should come out for this fantastic and fun event.

The festival is structured with a Beginner Track for those brand-new to calling and a Master Track for callers who are looking to learn/try new dances and techniques and deepen their calling repertoire. There are also workshops offered for musicians who want to learn how to play old time music for dances on banjo, fiddle, and guitar.
