Gene MurrowGene Murrow (NY) has been an English country dancer and musician since 1965, and has taught and called at clubs, workshops, festivals and balls in the U.S., England and Europe for the last 20 years. In 2006 he appeared at the Southam Gathering and Tring Ball in England and led a series of workshops in Japan. For CDSS, Gene has frequently chaired Early Music Week, English-American Dance Week, and English Dance Week. In summers 2000 and 2003, he offered a seminar on English Dance Leadership Training in Music at Early Music Week. In addition to oboe and recorders, Gene plays concertina, accordion, and crumhorn. He holds a degree in music from Columbia University with studies at Juilliard, Class of '68. As a member of the dance band MGM, he has made three recordings of dances by Fried Herman and Gary Roodman. Gene is the producer of the Boston Centre series of English dance recordings featuring Bare Necessities. He has served on the Country Dance and Song Society Governing Board. Gene approaches English country dances as works of art, striving "to make their richness of structure, musical form, texture, and affect enjoyable and appreciated by dancers of all abilities."

Gene will lead a callers' workshop focusing on working with musicians and crafting dance programs, and will teach two ECD classes. In an ECD class for advanced dancers, Hidden in Plain Sight, Gene will share ECD gems "hidden" in the most popular publications. In an ECD class for all, A Meter a Day, you will explore several metrical varieties, and how to move appropriately and gracefully to each.

Joanna ReinerJoanna Reiner (PA), an avid dance gypsy and Philadelphia-area English and Scottish dance leader, co-teaches English dance and longsword at Swarthmore College and is a regular caller for the Germantown Country Dancers (GCD). In addition, she co-leads GCD's English Country demonstration team. Joanna's calling has taken her from Amherst, MA to Ann Arbor, MI to BACDS English Week at Mendocino. She was very well received at her BACDS English week debut in 2008. At Pinewoods she has been on staff for Boston Centre July 4th Weekend and English-Scottish Session as well as CDSS English and English & American weeks. In her spare time, Joanna works to support her dance habit.

Joanna will teach longsword and two ECD classes. The longsword class will feature Lingdale, a sword dance in three parts from Yorkshire. ECD for All: Always in Style will be an exploration of the breadth of English dance, building your dance repertoire and style vocabulary. In ECD: Making it Your Own, you will experiment with learning old gems and new favorite dances in various ways.

Mary DevlinMary Devlin (OR) has called dances, taught workshops, and appeared at festivals and dance camps throughout the US and in Canada and Europe. This past August she taught at festivals and camps in England including Morland Dance Week, Whitby Folk Festival, and the Southam Gathering. She is looking forward to returning to Denmark to staff the Silkeborg Konvent dance weekend in May. Mary teaches English country, contra and square dancing, and she especially enjoys developing and leading workshops designed to enhance dancers' skill and pleasure in dancing. She also loves to work with callers of all levels, from beginner to experienced. Mary has been program director for two CDSS English-American Weeks at Pinewoods and for two BACDS English Dance & Music Weeks at Mendocino. She was on the CDSS Governing Board for a number of years and is the CDSS Past-President.

Mary is our program director for 2011. She will lead the callers for the ECD Open Mic class.

Matthew DuveneckMatthew Duveneck (OR) was a big hit when he was on camp staff in 2009. He grew up folk dancing. During the last ten years he has focused much of his creative energy on couple dancing and can often be found at dance events across the U.S. and beyond. Over the years Matthew has been a member of several Morris teams and currently dances with the Bridgetown Morris Men (OR). He teaches couple dance workshops nationally, focusing on Argentine tango and waltz. During the last few years he has taught at BACDS weeks, Stanford Waltz Week, Bates College Argentine Tango Club, Pinewoods, John Campbell Folk School, Augusta Dance Camp and Timber Ridge. He now lives in Portland, Oregon where he studies Argentine tango and Environmental Science.

Matthew will teach a waltz class and a partnering workshop.

Kate Power and Steve EinhornSteve Einhorn (WA) started making music in the 60s in New York City and Boston. He moved to Portland in 1978 and has continued his musical life in the Northwest. A singer/songwriter, he plays guitar and ukulele. Steve's name has been synonymous with Artichoke Music, his extraordinary Portland music shop launched in 1981. In 2007 he handed over Artichoke to pursue his call as performer, recording artist, producer, visual artist and teacher, both at home and on the road with Kate Power. Steve and Kate are legendary in the Pacific northwest for harmonizing community, presenting concerts and workshops in a variety of settings for all kinds of folks. They created the Ukalaliens® Songbook & CD to teach the method behind the Ukalaliens Workshop®, as well as the Rise Up Ukalaliens® Singalong. Their songs range from eloquent originals to traditional favorites woven together with harmony, anecdotal Americana and humor.

Steve will co-teach Ukalaliens® Workshop (a class on how to play ukulele), co-lead Singing: How to Make Beautiful Music with Everybody, and teach Making Art Outside the Box.

Steve Einhorn and Kate PowerKate Power (WA) is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, playing DADGAD guitar, open-back banjo, 6-string ukulele and high-strung Nashville guitar. Born in Boston to musical parents in a large Irish-American family, Kate came of age during the folk revival in New York City and "metropolitan New York" (New Jersey). She began to play in coffeehouses and at festivals at fifteen and established her place in the New York folk scene as a singer-songwriter. Kate joined forces with Steve Einhorn in 1994 and they have been harmonizing ever since. They founded the Ukalaliens® movement to teach the uninitiated and convert non-players to the joys of making music on ukuleles. They travel around the country with dozens of Kala ukes to share, teaching folk songs with an artistic, whimsical and inclusive approach. Find out more about Kate and Steve on their website.

ReunionReunion has been making music together since 1994 when Barbara Greenberg, Daniel Beerbohm, and Jonathan Jensen met as staff musicians during English Week at Pinewoods. Collaborating was so enjoyable that they were determined to keep at it after camp. Despite their already busy lives in and outside the world of dance music, they manage to keep fulfilling the promise of their band name. They are featured on two CDs of Gary Roodman dances.

Reunion will play for an ECD class as a band.

Daniel BeerbohmDaniel Beerbohm (NJ), on clarient, flute, and whistles, spices his English and contra dance playing from a rich background of swing, klezmer, and classical. He performs extensively with Reunion, Hold the Mustard, A Joyful Noise, and Trio Con Brio at dances and camps throughout the east coast and occasionally westward.

Daniel will play for ECD and the waltz class.

Barbara GreenbergBarbara Greenberg (NJ) began fiddling during her college years and has been on the dance floor or a bandstand since 1980. Playing both contra and English country dance music with Hold The Mustard, A Joyful Noise, A Band Named Bob, and Reunion, she is highly sought after to play and teach at dance weekends and camps. She has recorded seven albums of dance music with her bands and traveled internationally with them. When Barbara is not fiddling, she is teaching the next wave of fiddlers and violinists in her studio.

Barbara will play for ECD and the partnering class.

Jonathan JensenJonathan Jensen (MD) is an inspired pianist in a wealth of musical styles from English country and contra to ragtime and jazz. He also plays mandolin (performing with the Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra and the Mandolin Quartet), recorders, krummhorn, whistle, ocarina, and bass (with the Baltimore Symphony). In addition to playing with Reunion, he is a member of Taylor Among the Devils. Jonathan composes brilliant English country dance tunes and waltzes, delighting both dancers and choreographers.

Jonathan will play for ECD and the waltz class.

Anita AndersonAnita Anderson (WA) is an extraordinary English country and contra dance pianist, playing with Tricky Brits, Bag o' Tricks, Roguery, and other Northwest bands. She is also a superb dancer, and this informs her playing to the dancers' delight. She brings a large bag of tricks to her piano playing, with influences from doo-wop, baroque, ethnic, and vintage dance music--all in attentive service to the dancers. Over the years, she has presented musicians' workshops at several camps, including BACDS English Week at Mendocino and Lark in the Morning. She also teaches private dance piano lessons. Anita is an excellent singer, Scandinavian musician and dancer, and composer of contra and English country dance tunes. 

Anita will teach the English Dance Musicians Course, and play for ECD.

Charlie HancockCharlie Hancock (CA), pianist and accordionist, is equally adept playing for English country, Scottish country, contras, and display dancing. He has played for BACDS dances, camps, and balls for 18 years, with occasional gigs further afield, including Pinewoods and the Portland (OR) English ball. He is a member of Bay Area folk ensemble Euphonia, and has recorded with Sylvia Herold, Holly Tannen, and Cathie Whitesides. Infusing jazz, swing, and Irish music, he plays with brilliance, drive, and clarity.

Charlie will play for the longsword class, the partnering class, and for ECD.

Dave BartleyDave Bartley (WA) plays mandolin, guitar, cittern, and other plucked string instruments. He has written over 300 tunes for English dance, contra dance, and couple dancing. With the Tricky Brits, KGB, Roguery and over a dozen other bands, Dave has played throughout the US and Canada, as well as parts of Europe and Australasia. Drawing from a musical experience that stretches from classical training to classic rock, Dave also currently plays in French cabaret, Big Band era swing, and Greek rebetika bands. From the mischievous to the profound, you never know what he's going to do next, but you can be sure you'll enjoy dancing to it.

Dave will lead the musicians for the ECD Open Mic class as well as play for ECD.

Michelle LevyMichelle Levy (CA) plays violin, viola, and vielle. Performing for over 20 years, she is on faculty at the Bay Area Academy of Music. Michelle studied classical viola and old-timey fiddle/banjo at Brown University. She currently studies Medieval performance practice on vielle with Shira Kammen. After receiving the McKasson scholarship to Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School, Michelle fell in love with the spontaneity of folk music and began a career focused on accompanying vocalists, improvising, and performing ancient music. For two years she toured with improvisational world music ensemble Cantiga. She performs throughout the country with an eclectic variety of ensembles and vocalists, including Celtic singer Abby Green, Ozark-mountain singer/songwriter Maia Archote, and Algerian Amazigh (Berber) songwriter Moh Alileche. She regularly performs concerts of Medieval music and fiddles for both Contra and English Country dances. The highlights of her career so far have been playing for dancers at the 2010 Fall Frolick in the serene woods of Aptos, CA as well as fiddling with Class V Music, an ensemble dedicated to creating music on whitewater rafting trips.

Michelle will teach a Band Workshop: Playing Well with Others, as well as play for ECD and the waltz class.

David Newitt (CA) is our sound engineer for the week.  He plays fiddle and concertina, dances ECD, Scottish, and display dance, and is a caller, all of which add to his expertise on the soundboard.
