The Dances

These dances notes are meant as reminder directions only, and are not to be considered full or definitive directions to the dances.  Final versions will be provided in the ball booklet received after registering.

We urge everyone to buy the books in which these fine contemporary choreographers have published their work, many of which are available at the CDSS Bookstore* indicates a "For Those Who Know" dance.  Instructions in red indicate a correction to the notes since the dance booklet was published.

Abbreviations and notes about the descriptions:

  • L and R are left and right, respectively
  • 1s, 2s, 3s, refer to 1st couple, 2nd couple, 3rd couple, &c, in a set
  • Instructions with while indicate two actions occurring at the same time
  • Cpl is short for couple; likewise Cpls is couples.
  • M and W are man and woman, respectively (as in M1 for 1st man, or W3 for 3rd woman).
  • "R and L" or "Rights and lefts" implies hands; "circular hey" implies no hands.
  • All turns, circles, &c, are once around if not otherwise specified.
  • Turn singles with no specified direction may be done as the dancer wishes.
  • In duple minor dances, "1st Corners" always refers to the dancers first man and second woman.

A1 Mirror Hey for 4: 1s and 3s face down with hands joined, while 2s and 4s face up without hands joined.  Do a hey-for-4 along the lines, joining hands with partner at the top & casting up at the bottom.
A2 In 2-cpl sets, R-hand star half-way, L-hand star back.
Pousette CW half-way with partner.
End cpls case to the center while middle cpls lead to the end.
B In 2-cpl sets, 3 changes circular hey.
In 4-cpl set, middle cpls face and change with each other, passing L-shoulder.
In new 2-cpl sets, 1s corners cross, then 2s corners cross, circle 4 L half-way.

B1 1s (in middle place) R-hand into 1/2 hey-for-3s across the set (M1 with 2s, W1 with 3s.  Pass R-shoulder to start).  Turn L-hand (M1 with W2, W1 with M3) into 1s L-shoulder gypsy half-way into partner's place.
B2 Repeat B1, M1 dancing with 3s and W2 with 2s.  All end proper and progressed.

Part I
A In a double and back.  Repeat.
B Face partner, set and change places while turning single (as in Trip to Paris)
Face neighbor and repeat, end facing away from other cpl.
C1 Lead partner toward side wall (M on R of partner), turn and lead back until R-shoulder with opposite.
Turn to face that person in line-of-4.
Half hey-for-4 up and down, R-shoulder opposite to start.
End facing up or down next to opposite with back to partner (M on R)
C2 Repeat C1, leading opposite up or down to start and facing partner to start the half hey.  End meeting partner in original home place.
