COVID Safety Policy (Updated 7/16/2022)

In line with current BACDS policies, all attendees (including musicians and callers) will be required to show proof of vaccination, including at least one booster, and agree to wear a well-fitting KF94, KN95, or N95 mask in the dance hall and common areas. Based on experiences at other dances and to enhance everyone’s safety, we will be requiring all participants to provide proof of a negative antigen test within 6 hours of their first arrival at the hall. We will also be enhancing the fans in the already large and well-ventilated hall and are making plans to have the dining take place outside in a nice grassy area.

MORE ON TESTING: We encourage those travelling a significant distance to test before they leave home. If someone becomes symptomatic or tests positive during the weekend, we ask all their travelling companions or roommates to self-test each day. Those who test positive are asked not to attend. We recommend that all dancers consider self-testing each day as appropriate. We will not have a cancellation deadline or fee.

We will have some test kits on site but not enough for everyone. People can easily order a set of 8 tests online at https://www.covid.gov/tests. To avoid a backup at the hall while people wait for their test results, you can test before you leave for the hall or while in your car and take a picture of the results. You can then show the image and the picture’s “details” with the date and time it was taken at the sign-in table.

Saturday Night Theme

For those who like to dress up for Saturday night, the theme is: MASK-A-RAVE (who says we can't have fun with masks on??)

While we welcome costume masking on Saturday night, it is important that you DO NOT modify, alter or replace a well-fitted N95 or KN95-type mask which must be worn at all times within the dance hall.

The Facility

The Pomeroy Recreation and Rehabilitation Center has hosted Balance the Bay since 2009. Located just 2000 feet from the ocean, overlooking Lake Merced, it is kept cool in summer by sea breezes and coastal fogs. Because the only neighbor is the San Francisco Zoo, there is no problem with late-night music, and there is plenty of parking.

The dance hall at the Pomeroy Center has a rubber-pad sprung floor. There's excellent ventilation and room for six long lines.

The main hall is used for snacks, information tables and band concerts, and has lots of space for hanging out. It has a fireplace and big windows overlooking Lake Merced. There are balconies overlooking the lake, a grassy courtyard, and plenty of rest rooms.

Directions

Balance the Bay is held at The Pomeroy Recreation and Rehabilitation Center. While the address is listed as 207 Skyline Boulevard, the entrance is on Herbst Road. If you are using GPS, Mapquest, or other similar sources, use "100 Herbst Road" as your destination.

The Pomeroy Center occupies a triangular block. The east side of the block is Skyline Boulevard. Traffic flows one way around the triangle. You enter from Skyline Blvd at the North end of the triangle, exit at the south.

There are plenty of hotels in the area, or you may request housing with local dancers on your registration form, and we will contact you. Consider carpooling as housing is generally available about 30-60 minutes from the hall. To request housing, please let us know on your registration form and we'll do our best to accommodate everyone.

Note: While motels in SF proper can be pricey, there are a number of lower-priced options available just South of the city within 30 minutes of the dance hall (When you do an online search, consider Daly City, South San Francisco, San Bruno and Millbrae, or even Burlingame.)

Public Transit

The Pomeroy Center is served directly by the MUNI #18 (46th Avenue) bus. Get off at the "Skyline Blvd and Zoo Road" stop. The southbound stop is on Armory Road, just across the street from the entrance to the Pomeroy Center. The northbound stop is across Skyline Boulevard at the intersection with Herbst Road.

Parking

There's plenty of parking on Herbst and Armory Roads. It's all at 90 degrees to the curb. To avoid an expensive ticket, do not park in front of the bus stop shelter across from the Pomeroy Center entrance, or in a handicapped parking spot without proper plates. It's OK to park overnight, but remember that this is a big city neighborhood. Don't leave valuables in your car or anything valuable looking on the seat.
