What are the pros and cons of the various lodging choices?
CARY DORM
Pro: Newest dorm. Smaller rooms (mostly four people). The
bathrooms are inside the building. There is a comfortable lounge. The windows
are adjustable and each room has a heater. A twenty-foot walk from the main
dance hall.
Con: Costs $10 more. Since Cary is
more popular, there's more competition for bathrooms.
MILLER/MORRIS DORMS
Pro: Quiet. Late night noise discouraged. $1- cheaper
than Cary. More "camp" like, less dorm-like.
Con: More "camp" like -- larger
rooms (8 - 12 people), need to go outside to reach a bathroom, more negotiation
needed about heat/cold/lights because of larger rooms and more people per room.
Need to walk another
several hundred feet from the dance hall, compared to Cary. (Still within
a five-minute walk, though.)
TENT CAMPING
Pro: Quiet, private. Pay Miller-Morris rates, don't share your space.
Tent ground close to farther parking lot; less schlepping.
Con: Limited number
of tent spaces available; need to reserve with registration. Competing for
bathroom space with indoor campers. Further away from dance hall.
VEHICLE CAMPING
Pro: Pay Miller-Morris rates, don't share your space.
Have privacy if not comfort. Parking lot conveniently located between dining
hall and dance hall.
Con: competing for bathroom space with indoor
campers, pedestrian traffic near your car while you try to sleep, mostly
can't use big
RV or comfortable trailer -- no room in parking lot and narrow road would make
it difficult to get it there.
OFF-SITE
Pro: Stay at home or at pleasant bed and breakfast, motel, or offsite
campground. Pay Fall Weekend less money, have as much privacy and freedom from
noise as you like. Don't need to find pet-sitters.
Con: Don't get the
feeling of immersion in camp; may miss meals that you're paying for anyway.
