Balance the Bay 2015 Bands and Callers
August 7-9, 2015, San Francisco, CA

THE MORRISON BROTHERS: Maybe you’ve already noticed the unusual age spread these brothers display. In fact, though all brothers to someone, only Will and Owen are actually brothers to each other. Jim is their dad and the band happened in the course of raising a family. They have played for contra, square and Irish set dancing since Owen was 15. Today Owen plays with about 6 different bands and is a full time guitarist. Will is an electrical engineer but finds time to drum with a couple of other bands too. Jim fixes computers by day and plays on the porch in the evenings. They are joined on bass by Nathan Wilson of Lexington, KY.
THE SYNCOPATHS: From dance floors to concert halls, the Syncopaths bring a fresh, contemporary spin to music and songs rooted in the Scottish, Irish, and American folk traditions. The exuberant joy they derive from the music and each other is palpable and contagious. They ably stretch melodic boundaries while keeping a steady, compelling, danceable beat. At the heart of the band's sound are the twin engines of Ryan McKasson's dynamic, Scottish-based fiddling and the understated-but-monster picking of mandolinist Ashley Broder. Jeff Spero provides wonderfully inventive and surprising piano accompaniment, anchored by the driving power of Christa Burch's non-traditional bodhrán. Christa also lends her singular voice — warm, supple, expressive, and intimate — to the band's songs.
WILL MENTOR is a contra and square dance caller from Northern Vermont known for his clear teaching, upbeat wit, and relaxed stage presence. He loves to choreograph evenings with a variety of dances and tempos that at times surprise and always delight, all the while keeping intact his guiding principle as a caller: "It's about the dancers!"
BETH MOLARO: Dancers from coast-to-coast will tell you that Beth Molaro is GREAT and when she calls, the dance is always a party. She is truly a dance caller dedicated to the art of Traditional American Dancing and good fun. Beth calls high-energy, turbocharged squares and smooth flowing contras. She is known for her quick no-nonsense walk throughs and effective teaching for both the newest dancers and the most seasoned of dancers. Beth's dances are always a guaranteed whoop and aholler good time!
REBECCA MOLARO will teach a flatfooting workshop during the weekend.
