reconstructor of Playford dances.

<em>Francis Attanasio (NH)</em>--ECD dancers know Francis as co-editor (with
Helene Cornelius) of the Boston Centre's English Country Dance
Collection. Display dancers, however, know him as a stalwart of the
Pinewoods Morris Men and Cambridge Revels, for which he has taught
the dynamic Papa Stour dance.
Francis writes:
<blockquote>
The Norse name "Papey Stjora", meaning the "Big Island of the
Priests", was given by the Vikings, perhaps as early as the sixth or
seventh century. Papa Stour is an island just off Mainland, Shetland
Isles. The dance is one of the most noted and documented dances from
the longsword tradition, and the oldest, starting with a manuscript in
1788, and documented by Sir Walter Scott in "The Pirate" in 1821. The
sword dance is unique in Shetland, probably of Norse origin, and
related to the longsword dances of northeast England. The traditional
tune is in the well-known form of the Norwegian "polsk".

Dancing Marleys, Meg has performed in England, Canada and the U.S..
She has studied with masters of English clog including Pat Tracey,
Alex Woodcock and Sam Sherry as well as Connecticut's Anna Marley.

Accordionist Eddy Jay first started playing for English country
dancing as the leader of Newfolks, and then teamed with friend and
fellow classical player Fiona Barrow on violin as the Bristol
Players. Together they have performed internationally for theatre
(National Theatre/Kneehigh's 'Tristan and Yesult' - Australian leg),
and at the UK's most prestigious folk music and dance festivals
(including Lichfield, Sidmouth, Chippenham, Southam Gathering). Eddy
and Fiona also appeared at BACDS's recent Spring Weekend, where they
were an instant hit. We're delighted Eddy's busy touring schedule
has allowed him to join us for Fall Frolick as well.

Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Shira Kammen has spent well over half her
life exploring the worlds of early and traditional music. A member for many
years of the early music Ensembles Alcatraz and Project Ars Nova, and Medieval
Strings, she has also worked with Sequentia, Hesperion XX, the Boston Camerata,
the Balkan group Kitka, the Oregon, California and San Francisco Shakespeare
Festivals, and is the founder of Class V Music, an
ensemble dedicated to performance on river rafting trips. She has performed and
taught in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Israel, Morocco, and
Japan, and on the Colorado, Rogue and Klamath Rivers.
<p>
Shira happily collaborated with singer/storyteller John Fleagle for fifteen
years, and performs now with several new groups: a medieval ensemble, Fortune's
Wheel: a new music group, Ephemeros; an eclectic ethnic band, Panacea; as well
as frequent collaborations with performers such as storyteller/harpist Patrick
Ball, sopranos Anne Azema , Susan Rode Morris, medieval music expert Margriet
Tindemans, and in many theatrical and dance productions.
<p>
She has played on several television and movie soundtracks, including 'O',
amodern high school-setting of Othello. Some of her original music can be heard
in an independent film about fans of the work of JRR Tolkien. The strangest
place Shira has played is in the elephant pit of the Jerusalem Zoo. She hopes
to spend more time playing music of all kinds in the wilderness.

Judy Linsenberg (recorder) is recognized as one of the leading
exponents of the recorder in the U.S. Director of the acclaimed
Baroque ensemble, Musica Pacifica, whose eight recordings on the
Virgin Classics and Dorian labels have received international
acclaim, she has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, including
solo appearances at the Hollywood Bowl and Lincoln Center; and has
been featured with such leading ensembles as the San Francisco
Symphony, the San Francisco Opera, Philharmonia Baroque, American
Bach Soloists, the Los Angeles Opera and the LA, Portland and Seattle
Baroque Orchestras. A Fulbright scholar to Austria, she was awarded
the Soloist Diploma with Highest Honors from the Vienna Academy of
Music. She has been a visiting professor at the Vienna Conservatory
and Indiana University's Early Music Institute in Bloomington and has
taught at Stanford, the SF Conservatory and early music workshops
throughout the U.S.

has gone through
a succession of musical stages, from early music to traditional. Jim has

and is currently active as a musician for English country dances, contras,
Irish and Cape Breton sessions and dances from Brittany. Jim is a board
member
of the Traditional Dancers of Santa Cruz, led
the band for the 2000 Playford Ball, and programmed the 2001 and 2002 BACDS
Fall Weekends, and two American Weeks at Mendocino.

Erin Vang holds degrees in horn performance from St. Olaf College and
Northwestern University and has studied with Boris Rybka, Kendall
Betts, and Dale Clevenger. She freelanced in the Chicago area for
seven years, including performances with the Lyric Opera of Chicago,
the Ravinia Festival Orchestra, Symphony II, and Symphony of the
Shores, and tours of Korea and Germany with the Chicago Chamber
Orchestra. Since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, she has been
appearing with the Oakland East Bay, San Jose, Marin, Monterey,
Berkeley, Napa Valley, and Santa Rosa Symphonies; Symphony Silicon
Valley, Sacramento and Women's Philharmonics, Festival and Pocket
Opera companies, and the Foghorn Quartet. Erin and various beasts
from the brass family have also been known to show up at Bay Area
English country dance events and for several years perpetrated tuba
for Bufflehead Northwest Morris

analyze and articulate what makes good dancing, she has participated in
weekends, workshops and festivals across the U.S. and in Canada and the

Jocelyn was a member of the first rapper sword teams in California ,
but in more recent years she has given her allegiance to longsword. She
founded Ring of Cold Steel in 1996, to perform her version of
Ampleforth. Jocelyn has been involved in the English dance world since
1980, and has performed morris all over the USA, England, New Zealand
and Canada. She has taught sword and morris workshops at several BACDS
camps, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and Lark in the Morning. She
attained her masters degree in English dance history in 1993 from Dr.
Tony Barrand.

Jocelyn will offer longsword in varying degrees of difficulty, suitable for
beginners and experienced practitioners. This relatively low-impact display
dance form is gentler on knees and ankles than morris dancing, and can weave
a hypnotic spell over the viewer.

Kathrine has played fiddle and some piano for contra, square, and
English dances and dance camps since the mid-80s. Some of her early
mentors were Cathie Whitesides, Jeremy Kammerer, and Barry Shultz. She
credits Cathie with teaching her how to fit tunes to dances, Jeremy with
how to live the itinerant musician's life on a low budget and with
honor, and Barry with helping her master the slippery and offbeat ways
of Southeastern American fiddling. Lark in the Morning camp deserves
mention for providing some of her first opportunities to play for
dancing, and for the inspiration to try to make life a nonstop music
party.
<P>
Today Kathrine plays with Fear of Commitment, the Guppies
and the KJammers. Kathrine lives with husband Kit Nelson near the beach
at Half Moon Bay.

of dancing. Highly regarded by dancers, callers, and musicians for the
attention that he pays to the needs of those on and off the stage, Nick is the
house sound engineer for the San Francisco, Berkeley, and Sonoma contra dances
and the Berkeley experienced English dance. Taking equal joy in producing
contra, English, and other folk and couple dance music of the highest quality,
Nick's credits as lead or assistant sound engineer include numerous BACDS
events and camps (English Week, Fall Weekend, Fall Ball, Sierra Swing, and
local tours by The Flying Romanos, Pete Grassby, and Four in a Bar),
the first two NBCDS Mad Robin English balls, the San Francisco Free Folk
Festival, and the Fairfield (IA) Folk Arts and Dance Co-op's annual Bare
Necessities dance weekends.
