Friday, October 2

The month kicks off with the 1st Friday dance in downtown Palo Alto at MT. Bob Fraley will lead the dance, tunes by the newly-augmented Nonesuch Country Dance Players (Ruth Anne Fraley, Susan and Stanley Kramer, Mark Daly, Paul Koska) .

Saturday, October 3
The SF contra at SF features series host Charlie Fenton with addictive music by Ladies' Chain Smokers (Deirdre Lynds and Rebecca King) and special guest Lee Anne Welch.

Wednesday, October 7
Come dance a contra in Berkeley at GNC (where there's dancing every Wednesday) as Erik Hoffman calls, music by an Open Band led by Paul Kotapish & Friends.

...While down in San José at SJS Alisa Dodson leads the wonderful English dance with music by Greenwich Mean Time (Kay Thorne, Vaughn Wolff, Susan and Stanley Kramer).

Friday, October 9
The 2nd Friday Berkeley contra at FIN features Kirston Koths calling, with the blue-blooded bluegrass of The Earls (Ray Bierl, Alan Senauke, Carolyn Cirimele).

Saturday, October 10
The monthly San Francisco English dance at BET starts at 7:30, with Bob Fraley leading the dance, Ruth Anne Fraley, David Strong, & David Mostardi serving up the tunes.

The 2nd Saturday contra at PA features Kirston Koths caller and Tom Saffell (Nashville), Lee Anne Welch, Jerry Ashford, & Caroline Cirimele, musickers.

Sunday, October 11
& Squares and contras in one evening? Sure, starting at 7pm in El Cerrito at ECV: Jim Saxe calls to the tunes of The Smashing Bumpkins String Band (Stefan Curl, Susan Sullivan, & Mike Stadler)

Wednesday, October 14
Berkeley English dance at GNC: Alisa Dodson calls to the music of Craig Johnson, Danny Carnahan, & Avis Minger

Friday, October 16
The Palo Alto English dance, AWOL on the printed calendar, is happening at MT; Bob Fraley calling, with tunes by Nonesuch Country Dance Players (Ruth Anne Fraley, Susan and Stanley Kramer, Mark Daly, Paul Koska) .

, , & (oh my!). The 16th also marks the start of BACDS' Fall Weekend, which is currently FULL with a wating list; check the webpage for late-breaking news.

Saturday, October 17
The contra at SF! Tom Roby calls to the decidedly Irish music of Tipsy House (Jack Gilder, Chris Knepper and Junji Shirota)

Wednesday, October 21
English dancing in San José at SJS, as Jody McGeen & Alan Winston lead the dance, music by the redoubtable Greenwich Mean Time (Kay Thorne, Vaughn Wolff, Susan and Stanley Kramer).

It's a 3rd Wednesday, the contra at GNC has Erik Hoffman calling, with an Open Band led by Shira Kammen, Chris Knepper, & Charlie Hancock. Wow!

Friday, October 23
4th Friday contra at SF - Charlie Fenton calls to that trio that's red-fezzed but rarely red-faced: The Kozmonutz (Ray Bierl, Paul Kotapish, Craig Johnson).

Saturday, October 24
At PA, in Palo Alto, it's a Gala Sierra Swing Benefit in Palo Alto, calling by Erik Hoffman, music by Daniel Steinberg, Paul Kotapish, Charlie Hancock, and more; special goodies and ... it's all for a good cause (sliding scale admission).

The monthly Fairfax contra at FCC with Stuart Moody and the enigmatically-named band 42 (John & Iseult Caufield, Michael Harmon)

The experienced English dance at GNC: Alisa Dodson calls, to the delightful music of Mark Carroll and Stan & Susan Kramer.

Sunday, October 25
FAMILY Special afternoon in El Cerrito at ECV, as Erik Hoffman joins with the Family Camp All-Stars at the 1998 Family Camp reunion! Everyone is welcome; 2-5:30pm, followed by potluck dinner...

& Then, continuing at ECV, at 7pm it's a square/contra dance with Erik Hoffman and music by an Open Band led by Ray Bierl, Paul Kotapish, & Kathrine Gardner.

Wednesday, October 28
Fourth Wednesday English dance at Berkeley's GNC... series host David Newitt calls to the superb tunes of Chuck Ward, Danny Carnahan, & Anise Feldman.

Friday, October 30
Fifth Friday English dance at MT, and a Hallowe'en party to boot (costume optional) Bob Fraley calls, to the haunting music of Nonesuch Country Dance Players (Ruth Anne Fraley, Susan and Stanley Kramer, Mark Daly, Paul Koska)

Saturday, October 31
At PA Eric Black (Tokyo) & Special Ghosts invoke the Annual Halloween Costume Ball, 8-12pm, $10/9. Music by The Billies (Ray Bierl, Kevin Carr, Paul Kotapish, & Daniel Steinberg) - Plus the Ron Award for the best costume; bring refreshments!

General Notes

BACDS currently holds about twenty dances a month, with series on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. All dances start at 8pm unless otherwise indicated.
Admission (unless otherwise noted): Wednesday dances, $6; Weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) dances, $7. There's a $1 discount for BACDS and CDSS or CDS-affiliate members (that includes Santa Cruz/Monterey Country Dancers and the North Bay Country Dancers), with valid membership card.
A free beginners' orientation session is offered at 7:30pm for all Friday and Saturday contradances and for the Wednesday Berkeley English dances. We'll strive to keep this list current; just in case, BACDS phone hotlines are at (415) 282-7374 (San Francisco) and (650) 965-9169 (South Bay)
