BET--Bethany United Methodist Church, 1268 Sanchez (at Clipper), San Francisco. 2nd Saturday English dance, 7:30pm.
ECV--El Cerrito Veterans' Hall, 6401 Stockton at Kearney, El Cerrito. 2nd and 4th Sundays East Bay Square/Contra dance, 7pm
FCC--Fairfax Community Church, 2398 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Fairfax. 4th Saturday contradances
FIN--Finn Hall, 1819 Tenth Street (near Hearst, off University), Berkeley. 2nd Friday contradances
GNC--Grace North Church, 2138 Cedar St. (near Oxford), Berkeley. Dancing every Wednesday: contras on 1st, 3rd and 5th, English on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. Also the 4th Saturday experienced English dance

August

Wednesday, August 2
First up for August is a contradance at Berkeley at GNC. Jim Saxe leads the dance with a fine Open Band led by David Brown, Kathrine Gardner, Michael Harmon.

Friday, August 4
It's the first Friday English country dance in downtown Palo Alto at MT, with Bob Fraley and Nonesuch Country Dance Players (Ruth Anne Fraley, Susan and Stanley Kramer, Mark Daly and Paul Kostka) .

Saturday, August 5
San Francisco contra, at, well, SF. Series host Charlie Fenton calls with a fine trio: W.B. Reid (from Seattle), Erin Shrader (a fine fiddler from Port Townsend, WA), and local stalwart Charlie Hancock.

Wednesday, August 9
Alan Winston makes an all-too-rare appearance north of Silicon Valley, at the English dance at GNC. Music by an Open Band led by Charlie Hancock, David Strong, Anise Feldman

Friday, August 11
At the once-a-month Friday Berkeley contra at FIN, series host Kirston Koths calls to the delightful music of Bobbi Nikles, Charlie Hancock, and John Light.

Saturday, August 12
Two dances to choose from: in Palo Alto at PA Eric Black calls to the fine quintet Sidesaddle (Lee Anne Welch, Jerry Ashford, Kim Elking, Lisa Burns, & Dave Ristrom).

While in the Noe Valley district of San Francisco starting at 7:30 at BET, Bill Meakin leads the dance, and the trio of William Allen, David Strong, Anise Feldman serve up the tunes.

Sunday, August 13
& Yes, you can do both square and contra dancing in El Cerrito at ECV tonight starting at 7pm. Erik Hoffman calls, to the one-of-a-kind sound of the community band Hell Broke Loose in Berkeley. (Musicians, contact Erik to join in the fun: (510) 444-4397 or erikthor@pobox.com.)

Wednesday, August 16
It's Wednesday night, so there's a BACDS dance at GNC in Berkeley with an Open Band. Tonight it's a contra with Charlie Fenton, and the band is led by Chris Knepper, John Light, and Kyle Thayer.

Friday, August 18
Third Friday English country dance at MT in downtown Palo Alto. Alan Winston leads the dance, tunes by Nonesuch Country Dance Players (Ruth Anne Fraley, Susan and Stanley Kramer, Mark Daly and Paul Kostka) .

Saturday, August 19
Hot times at the San Francisco contra out in the Sunset district at SF. Andy Wilson calls, with music by that irrepressible band The Kozmonutz (Ray Bierl, Craig Johnson, Paul Kotapish).

Wednesday, August 23
Fourth Wednesday English dance at GNC in Berkeley--Lise Dyckman leads the dance, and David Strong, Judy Linsenberg, and Craig Johnson lead the Open Band.

Friday, August 25
The San Francisco contra at SF takes on an Irish flavor as Jim Saxe calls contras to the decidedly celtic melodies of Tipsy House (Jack Gilder, Chris Knepper and Junji Shirota).

Saturday, August 26
The fourth Saturday Palo Alto contra at PA features Andy Wilson calling to the amazing trio of Freyda Epstein, Paul Kotapish, Daniel Steinberg. Yow!

While in the North Bay at the once-a-month Fairfax contra at FCC, series host Stuart Moody calls an evening of contras to music by Bobbi Nikles, Craig Fixler, and Jerry Allen.

The third fourth Saturday dance, of course, is the experienced English country dance at GNC in Berkeley. Tonight Lise Dyckman leads, with music by Charlie Hancock, Laurie Edelman, and Judy Linsenberg.

Sunday, August 27
& 7pm's the time, El Cerrito's ECV is the place, for a wonderful square and contra dance with Jim Saxe calling to an Open Band led by Ray Bierl, Stefan Curl, and Dan Warrick.

Wednesday, August 30
As has become tradition, the 5th Wednesday Berkely contra at GNC is Open Mic/Open Band. The Open Band is led by the amazing stringband dotGals (Susan Sullivan, Dan & Karen Warrick, and Adam Cavan), to call a dance that evening, please contact Lynn Ackerson (510-450-2386 (w), or 510-525-7440 (h) or lma@dor.kaiser.org)
